What is BikeChico!? Bike Weeks are celebrated throughout the world as a way to encourage citizens to try out bicycle commuting. BikeChico! is the local version of what the American League of Bicyclists promotes nationally. (Check out www.bikeleague.org for events during May.) The goal is to increase bicycle ridership as a mode of transportation. The benefits are huge! New bicycle commuters lose an average of 13 pounds during their first year of commuting and save almost a pound of CO2 per mile not driven from entering the atmosphere. Not to mention that it is a lot of fun to go by bike! This year will be the 4th year of BikeChico! During May 8th-15th ride to work, school, shop and play. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Students, employees, employers, moms, dads, grandparents--all pedalers- can join the fun. May 8th kicks off the week with the Children's Bike Swap. Check out the calendar of events on the home page for updates on fun activities. The City of Chico is again hosting the Business Bike Challenge drawing small, medium, and large sized businesses to join teams. Other teams are invited to participate as well. Details and sign up are at: www.ChicobikeChallenge.org. Percent ridership and total numbers of miles are calculated to determine the winning businesses. To cheer and support cyclists during the Monday through Friday (May 10-14th), 4 Energizer Stations will be located throughout Chico. Fill up on Great Harvest Bread, Delightfully Delicious Oogolow Bars, Chico Chai, Bidwell Perk Coffee and get your Frequent Cyclist Card to receive discounts from supporting local businesses. At the end of the week, enter your Frequent Cyclist Card for a chance to win prizes from the Butte Bicycle Coalition. Grand Prize: $100 Gift Certificate from Chico Bike and Board!
